CharGuard - Animal Bedding Support

$80.00

CharGuard is a screened pine biochar sourced as a waste product from local timber mills — and it’s proving to be one of the simplest ways to lift calf health and reduce bedding costs. When mixed through traditional bedding at around 20% biochar to 80% woodchip or sawdust, it helps absorb moisture and ammonia, cutting down on odour and humidity in pens.

This means cleaner, drier bedding for longer, fewer flies, and a healthier environment for young stock — reducing the risk of respiratory stress and scours. Once removed, the mix breaks down into a nutrient-rich, stable compost — full of carbon and slow-release nutrients, ready to return to the paddock.

Why it’s unique:

CharGuard gives new purpose to a waste material, helping farmers turn a timber by-product into a farm-ready, soil-building input. It doesn’t just manage waste better — it closes the loop between animal health, bedding management, and soil care.

Why Use It?

  • Cuts bedding volume needed — CharGuard holds moisture and ammonia, so chip lasts longer

  • Improves shed conditions — drier floors, fewer flies, better air quality

  • Supports young stock health — reduces scours and respiratory stress by keeping bedding cleaner

  • Closes the loop — once used, bedding breaks down into a nutrient-rich, carbon-holding compost ready to return to pasture or garden

  • Straightforward & versatile — perfect for composting systems, soil building, or trialling on-farm

How to use:
Mix at a ratio of 1 part CharGuard to 4 parts woodchip or sawdust (e.g. 20% biochar to 80% bedding material).
Spread as you would standard bedding. Can be either used as a base layer or loosely incorporated with bedding material. Once spent, the mixture can be composted and returned to pasture or garden.

Price is per tonne. Cartage and handling are additional and will be quoted separately.
